Indiana Diving Academy
Camp Information - Summer '12

Dear Coaches and Divers,

I would like to take this opportunity to personally invite you to attend the
Indiana Diving Academy. Whether it is teaching someone a reverse dive or a reverse 2 ½, I receive enormous satisfaction in helping academy divers improve and strive to reach their greatest potential. Over the years many academy divers have gone on to become outstanding age group, high school, collegiate, national, international divers. Many campers have also gone on to become counselors for the camp.

While at the academy, I would like to share with you over 30 years of experience gained from coaching at the national, international, and Olympic level and knowledge learned from teaching, writing, and researching motor learning and performance. To capture the entire academy experience, I recommend at least a two week stay. Special Note:  I will be coaching some of my IU divers at the U.S. Olympic Trials this summer.  Thus, camp will be run by my excellent assistant coaches for the few days I'm in Seattle.

I hope you will join me and my staff of coaches and elite-level IU divers as we train in our Olympic facilities on the beautiful campus of Indiana University.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jeff Huber
Head Diving Coach
Indiana University
U.S. Olympic Coach 2000, 2004, 2008

ATTENTION PARENTS: all campers are required to provide a Medical Consent Form allowing trained officials in and around Bloomington to give medical care to the minor if warranted. Additional forms are required. Please visit the Required Forms page for additional information.

Enrollment

Enrollment is open to campers ages 9 and older, as well as recent high school graduates, collegiate divers, & anyone interested in improving their diving skills!  Divers are encouraged to enroll early.  Please save a copy of your application for information purposes.  After receipt of your application, enrolled campers will receive an electronic packet via email with complete camp details.  Please read these materials carefully as they will answer most of your questions. Click here for a printable camp brochure.

Camp Costs and Additional Weeks
The first week of camp costs $590.  Each additional week is $545, which includes lodging, food, activities, and supervision over the weekend for campers staying multiple weeks. Additional weeks may be added while you are at camp (if space is available). Many divers come to camp and decide they would like to stay longer. A minimum of two weeks is highly recommended for serious divers and any combination of sessions is possible.  Multiple week campers are NOT required to check-out on Friday and re-check-in on Sunday. Supervision is provided for academy divers over the weekends. Multiple-week campers will need to bring additional spending money as 4 meals (Friday dinner, Saturday lunch and dinner, and Sunday lunch) will not be provided.  Campers are allowed to order-in or will be taken to nearby restaurants.  Campers may also wish to bring additional spending money for optional weekend activities (such as going to the movies, bowling, etc). Laundry facilities & supplies are available in the Camp House for stay-over campers for $5 as well.

CILTS Program  (Campers In Leadership Training)
For any mature camper age 16 or older, we recommend considering our CILTS program.  The program is designed to further challenge older campers for the benefit of camp as a whole. CILTS will have normal camper status (same cost, same diving schedule at the pools, etc) but will be given added responsibility around our Camp House and be asked to help lead fun events and a service project. Successful completion of the program will be rewarded with a Certificate of Completion, a Letter of Recommendation from Head Coach Jeff Huber and the IDA Staff, and consideration in the future to become an IDA Camp Counselor.  Since we will invest time and energy into training each CILTS member, we require each member to stay at least 2 weeks at camp.  Interested campers should contact our Camp Director, Justin Davis - divecamp@indiana.edu
.

The cost for the shuttle is $15.00 each way.  To set up transportation, contact Star of America at 812-876-7851 or visit their website at charterstaramerica.com.

*The shuttle will drop divers directly off at the Camp House.  However, you must tell the shuttle driver that you are with the Indiana Diving Academy. We are not on their normal route, but they will deviate their normal route and drop campers off directly at our Camp House if they are aware a dive camper is onboard. **

What Not to Bring
We encourage campers to be responsible with their belongings.  Labeling your items and using a lockable suitcase is always a great idea.  If you would be devastated if something (an ipod, labtop, etc) was lost or stolen, we encourage you not to bring that item to camp.  We understand that campers will bring potentially large sums of money to camp for traveling, to purchase items at the camp store, etc.  To ensure that this money is not misplaced or stolen, we are more than happy to set up an account for the camper.  We'll take the money at check-in, keep track of the camper's spending throughout the week, and return the remaining balance upon check-out.  Likewise, we always offer storage closets where we can keep valuable items (such as labtops, cameras, and ipods) under lock and key.

Themes for the Weeks!
To add to the excitement of camp, we love to have different themes every week !!  We decorate the house and do a lot of different things to "Rock the Theme" and make it fun for the campers.  On your end, it really helps if you bring clothes, decorations, etc. to help celebrate the theme in your week or week(s).  Here's a list of the themes:

Session One - Beach Week (Hawaiian shirts, hula shirts, leis, beach balls, etc)
Session Two - Superhero Week  (anything that resembles an established superhero like Superman/Batman, or just make one up!!)
Session Three - International Week  (Flags, soccer/rugby jerseys, etc)
Session Four -  Patriotic Week  (In celebration of July 4th.  Anything red, white, and blue)
Session Five - Christmas in July
(Anything that helps us bring the magic of the holidays to July.  Tacky sweaters, candy canes, stockings, etc.)

Rules and Regulations
These rules and regulations are to be followed by all campers during their visit to the Academy.  Failure to obey the following may result in immediate dismissal (any fees incurred from dismissal are the responsibility of the camper and family).  Please remember that each diver’s behavior is a direct reflection on the Academy and the sport of diving.

1.    No smoking or drinking alcoholic beverages.  Anyone drinking, smoking, or in possession of drugs and alcohol will be immediately sent home.

2.    Divers are not permitted in certain areas of the house.  These areas will be designated and are considered off limits.
3.    Boys are not permitted in girls’ rooms nor the girls in boys’ rooms.  Violation of this rule means dismissal.
4.    Divers are expected to make all workouts, lectures, recreational activities, etc., unless excused by Coach Huber.
5.    The house counselors are in charge.  Failure to follow the counselors’ instructions will result in dismissal.
6.    Stay out of the kitchen and do not take food from the dining area.
7.    No running or rough play inside the house.
8.    Divers sneaking out of the house, roaming the house, or in any other way causing trouble after lights out will be dismissed.

9.    No one will be permitted to go out at night alone or without permission from a house counselor.
10.    Divers must wear clothes and shoes during meals (i.e., no barefeet and swim suits).
11.    Campers need to bring athletic shoes and socks to all conditioning sessions.
12.    Divers are not permitted to operate cars unless the cars belong to them and they have Coach Huber’s and their parent's permission to drive off campus.  No other divers may ride in the car unless given permission from the counselor or Coach Huber. No divers may drive to any practices.

Indiana Diving Academy Objectives
These objectives are what I hope to accomplish with you while you are at camp.  We’ll start at whatever level you are currently diving and work up to your potential.
1.    To be able to perform a list of basic compulsory and optional dives.
2.    To be able to demonstrate a tower take-off for front, back, and inward actions.
3.    To dive up to your greatest potential.  This means learning as many dives, both spinning and twisting, as you are currently ready to learn.
4.    To learn fundamental diving mechanics based on scientific principles and laws.
5.    To be able to demonstrate the proper techniques for front, back, and reverse entries into the water.
6.    To be able to demonstrate a knee save for back and reverse entries and a pike save for front entries.
7.    To develop a good competitive attitude.
8.    To develop good workout habits for daily practices.
9.    To learn how to use short term and long term goal setting for motivation and improved diving performance.

11.    To develop a positive attitude toward yourself, your team members, your coach, and your competitors.
12.    To learn the importance of relaxation, visualization, and self-talk for diving performance.
13.    To experience being in somersault and twisting belts and learn new dives in them.
14.    To learn some techniques for dealing with fear of learning new dives and fear of competition.
15.    To learn that the most important thing is to always give your best effort and focus on your own diving because that is the only thing you have control over.
